One of John Denver’s biggest hits, “Annie’s Song“, was written for her. The song was released as a single from Denver’s album, Back Home Again. It was his second number-one song in the United States, occupying that spot for two weeks in July 1974. “Annie’s Song” also went to number one on the Easy Listening chart. Billboard ranked it as the No. 25 song for 1974. He composed the song in only ten minutes as he sat on a Colorado ski lift after the couple had an argument.

Annie Martell’s ex-husband, Denver died in 1997 when the experimental Rutan Long-EZ plane, aircraft registration number N555JD, crashed into Monterey Bay near Pacific Grove, California, while making a series of touch-and-go landings at the nearby Monterey Peninsula Airport. According to The Aspen Times, survivors of the Denver estate sold the main house for $2.38 million to DBZ Trust in February 1999.
