Asfari was born in Syria, the son of a diplomat, but was raised elsewhere. His first work was as a consulting engineer conducting soil testing in Oman.
He graduated from Villanova University in Pennsylvania, and he has an MSc in Civil and Urban Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.

Asfari’s salary at Petrofac was reduced by 45% in 2019 to £980,000, down from £1.8 million in 2018. He stepped down as CEO on December 31, 2020, and was appointed as a non-executive director in January 2021.
