Barbara Sukowa Biography
Sukowa was born in 1950 in Bremen, Germany. She is fluent in German, English, and French. Sukowa made her stage debut in Berlin in 1971, in a production of Peter Handke’s Der Ritt über den Bodensee, after studying acting at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna. The same year, Günter Beelitz invited her to join the Darmstädter National Theatre’s ensemble. She also worked with directors such as Luc Bondy in Frankfurt am Main and Hamburg, playing Marion in Büchner’s Danton’s Death and Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Rosalind in As You Like It and Desdemona in Othello were two other Shakespeare roles played in Europe. She appeared in Ibsen’s play The Master Builder.

Barbara Sukowa is a German stage and screen actress and singer. She has won three German Film Awards for Best Actress, three Bavarian Film Awards, the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress, the Venice Film Festival Award, and she has been nominated for European Film Awards, César Awards, and Grammy Awards. Sukowa is best known for her collaborations with Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Margarethe von Trotta, among others. She rose to prominence after appearing in Fassbinder’s West German miniseries Berlin Alexanderplatz, and the following year in his drama film Lola, for which she received her first German Film Award for Best Actress. Sukowa also appeared in Margarethe von Trotta’s 1981 film Marianne and Juliane. They would go on to collaborate on six more films. She also won the German Film Award and the Venice Film Festival Award for Best Actress for her performance. She received the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress in 1986 for her performance in the drama film Rosa Luxemburg.
Sukowa starred in the French romance drama film Two of Us in 2019, for which she was nominated for a Lumières Award for Best Actress and a César Award for Best Actress.
Sukowa played Gala Dal in the biographical film Dalland about Salvador Dal, which she co-starred in with Ben Kingsley in 2022. It had its world premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival.
