Claudia Maria Schiffer was born on August 25, 1970, in Rheinberg, a tiny town 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) northwest of Duisburg, to mother Gudrun and lawyer father Heinz Schiffer (1937-2007). Schiffer originally wanted to be a lawyer and worked in her father’s legal practice. Michel Levaton, the head of Metropolitan Model Agency, scouted her in a nightclub in Düsseldorf in October 1987, when she was 17, and she was later signed to the agency as a model. Schiffer travelled to Paris for a trial photo session after graduating from high school, and she later featured on the cover of Elle.
