Sir David Roberts McMurtry, CBE FRS FREng FIMechE is an Irish billionaire and the co-founder and executive chairman of Renishaw plc, the UK’s largest metrology equipment supplier. Renishaw plc was founded in 1979 by McMurtry and his former colleague John Deer. He purchased the patents for his trigger probes from Rolls-Royce plc in 1987 and began to exploit them himself.
He was appointed a Royal Designer for Industry in 1989.
McMurtry began his career as an apprentice at Bristol Aero Engines in 1958. Following an acquisition, he was hired by Rolls-Royce plc in 1966 as Deputy Chief Designer and Assistant Chief of Engine Design at Filton. While working on Concorde’s engines in 1973, he created his first trigger probe.

McMurty is married to Teresa and has three children: two sons and a daughter. He lives in the English town of Wotton-under-Edge.
McMurtry began work on Swinhay House in 2001. The “£30m futuristic eco-house” was featured in a BBC television episode of Sherlock.
