Franka Potente Biography
Potente was born in Münster, West Germany, and raised in nearby Dülmen as the elder of two children. Hildegard, her mother, is a medical assistant, and Dieter Potente, her father, is a teacher. Her Italian surname comes from her great-grandfather, a Sicilian slater who moved to Germany in the nineteenth century. Potente was 17 years old when she went to Humble, Texas, as an exchange student.

Franka Potente is an actress from Germany. She made her film debut in the comedy After Five in the Forest Primeval (1995), for which she received a Bavarian Film Award for Best Young Actress. Her breakthrough came in 1998, when she starred as the title character in the critically acclaimed action thriller Run Lola Run, for which she received a BAMBI Award for Best Actress. For her performance in the television film Opernball, she received additional critical acclaim and a Bavarian Television Award nomination (also 1998). Potente attended the Otto Falckenberg School of Performing Arts in Munich after graduating from high school in Germany. Potente worked as an actress outside of school and made her film debut in the 1995 student film Aufbruch. She was then discovered by a casting agent and appeared in Hans Christian Schmid’s film Nach Fünf im Urwald (After Five in the Forest Primeval).
In 2020, she released her first feature film, Home, for which she also wrote the screenplay. The film will be released in October 2020.
Potente made an appearance as Mother Mayhem in Titans season four in 2022.

Potente married American actor Derek Richardson in a private ceremony in mid-2012, following relationships with German film director Tom Tykwer and American actor Elijah Wood, among others. The couple has two daughters, born in 2011 and 2013, and lives in Los Angeles.
