Rinehart was born on February 9, 1954, in Perth, Western Australia, at St John of God Subiaco Hospital. Hope Margaret Nicholas and Lang Hancock are her parents. Rinehart lived with her parents in Nunyerry, 60 kilometers (37 miles) north of Wittenoom, until she was four years old. Her family then relocated to the Pilbara station of Mulga Downs. Rinehart later attended St Hilda’s Anglican School for Girls in Perth. She studied economics briefly at the University of Sydney before dropping out and working for her father in the Pilbara iron-ore industry. Rinehart rebuilt the HPPL company to become one of Australia’s most successful private companies.
