Canfield was born on August 19, 1944 in Fort Worth, Texas. He grew up in Wheeling, West Virginia, and graduated from Linsly Military Institute in 1962. Canfield graduated from Harvard University with a B.A. in Chinese History in 1966. He earned his M.Ed. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1973. In 1981, Canfield was awarded an honorary Ph.D. by the University of Santa Monica.
