Jawed Karim Biography
Jawed Karim was born in Merseburg, East Germany, on October 28, 1979, to a Bangladeshi father and a German mother. His father, Naimul Karim (Bengali: ), is a Muslim Bangladeshi researcher at 3M, and his mother, Christine, is a German biochemist at the University of Minnesota. He was the eldest of two brothers. Growing up in Neuss, West Germany, he crossed the inner German border with his family in the early 1980s due to xenophobia. Karim moved to Saint Paul, Minnesota, with his family in 1992, after experiencing xenophobia there as well. He attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign after graduating from Saint Paul Central High School in 1997.

Jawed Karim is a software engineer and Internet entrepreneur from the United States of Bangladeshi and German descent. He is a YouTube co-founder and the first person to post a video to the site. As of August 29, 2022, this first video, titled “Me at the Zoo” and uploaded on April 23, 2005, had been viewed over 246 million times. Karim designed many of the core components of YouTube, including its real-time anti-Internet-fraud system, while working at PayPal, where he met fellow YouTube co-founders Steven Chen and Chad Hurley. Karim interned at Silicon Graphics, Inc. during his undergraduate studies, where he worked on 3D voxel data management for very large data sets for volume rendering, including data for the Visible Human Project. He met Chad Hurley and Steve Chen while working at PayPal in 2002. They founded the video-sharing website YouTube three years later, in 2005. On April 23, 2005 PDT (April 24, 2005 UTC), Karim launched the first YouTube channel, “jawed,” and uploaded the website’s first video, “Me at the Zoo,” the same day. Karim enrolled as a graduate student in computer science at Stanford University while acting as an adviser to YouTube after co-founding the company and developing the YouTube concept and website with Chad Hurley and Steve Chen. Karim founded Youniversity Ventures (now known as YVentures) with partners Keith Rabois and Kevin Hartz in March 2008. Karim was an early investor in Airbnb, participating in the company’s initial seed round in April 2009. Palantir, Reddit, and Eventbrite have also received investments from Y Ventures.
