Gandel was born in Australia in 1935, the son of Jewish immigrants from Poland, Sam and Fay Gandel. His parents ran a corsetry shop on Melbourne’s Collins Street. Gandel attended Melbourne High School.

John Gandel AC, sometimes known as Aaron Jonna Gandel, is an Australian businessman, property developer, and philanthropist who made his fortune in the development of commercial real estate and shopping centers in Melbourne, Victoria.
Gandel took over his parents’ women’s clothes business (then known as Sussan) in the 1950s and built it into a chain of over 200 outlets with his brother-in-law Marc Besen. He purchased the Chadstone Shopping Centre in 1983, transferring Sussan to his brother-in-law in 1985 to focus on real estate. He went on to make his fortune in retail malls.

Gandel is married to Pauline, who was named a Companion of the Order of Australia in 2019 for her community service, humanitarian, charitable, and fundraising efforts, social inclusion, and efforts to strengthen ties between Australia and Japan. They have four children together. John and Pauline Gandel live in Melbourne’s Toorak neighborhood.
