Liu was born in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York, on December 2, 1968. Alexis became her middle name in high school. She is the third child born to Cecilia, a biochemist, and Tom Liu, a trained civil engineer who sold digital clock pens.
She has a brother named John and a sister named Jenny.
Liu went to Joseph Pulitzer Middle School (I.S.145) and Stuyvesant High School. Later, she attended New York University before transferring to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where she was a member of the Chi Omega fraternity. Liu has a Bachelor of Arts in Asian languages and cultures.
