Schweighöfer was born on March 11, 1981 in Anklam, Western Pomerania. He attended Berlin’s renowned acting school Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts for one year before dropping out. Nonetheless, the actor’s son had previously worked with established directors such as Peter Greenaway.

Matthias Schweighöfer is an actor, voice actor, film director, and producer from Germany. Raus aus der Haut (1997), directed by Andreas Dresen, was his first feature film role. He appeared in projects such as Soloalbum (2003), Off Beat (2004), Eight Miles High (2007), and Rabbit Without Ears in the years that followed. In Valkyrie, a 2008 film dramatizing the failed 20 July assassination and political coup plot to kill Adolf Hitler, Schweighöfer played Lieutenant-Colonel Franz Herber. The international release of Valkyrie and its all-star cast (including Tom Cruise, Kenneth Branagh, Terence Stamp, and Bill Nighy) not only allowed Schweighöfer to be recognized internationally, but also provided him with the opportunity to be cast in other English-speaking roles.
In 2021/2022, he played real-life music producer Frank Farian in Simon Verhoeven’s biopic Girl You Know It’s True about the scandalous pop duo Milli Vanilli, which was written and directed by him and produced by Wiedemann & Berg Film. Leonine plans to release the film theatrically in 2023.

Schweighöfer dated Ani Schromm from 2004 to 2012, and they reconnected in the summer of 2013. They have a daughter who was born in 2009 and a son who was born in 2014. Schweighöfer and Schromm later divorced, and Schweighöfer is currently dating his Army of Thieves co-star Ruby O. Fee. Schweighöfer is currently residing in Berlin.
