Fassbender was born on April 2, 1977, in Heidelberg, Germany, to an Irish mother Adele (from Larne) and a German father Josef Fassbender. Catherine, his older sister, is a neuropsychologist at the MIND Institute in Sacramento, California. According to family legend, his mother is the great-grandniece of Michael Collins, an Irish commander during the War of Independence. Fassbender’s parents transferred him to Killarney, Ireland, when he was two years old, to run the West End House, a restaurant where his father also worked as a chef. His parents picked Killarney for their children to grow up in the countryside, as opposed to the industrial setting of their former German domicile. Fassbender was reared Catholic and served as an altar boy at his family’s church. He and his sister spent the summer in Germany. He went to Fossa National School outside of Killarney and St. Brendan’s College in Killarney. When he was 17, he decided he wanted to be an actor after being cast in a play.
