Ralph Sarich Biography

Sarich was born in Baskerville, Western Australia, on December 10, 1938, to an Austrian and a Croatian family. His parents arrived in Australia before the 1930s Great Depression. Sarich began an apprenticeship as a fitter and turner while also attending Midland Technical School part-time for high school years 11 and 12. He graduated with honors from his apprenticeship, during and after which he did engineering units one day per week, night classes, and correspondence.

Ralph Tony Sarich AO is an Australian automotive engineer, inventor, and entrepreneur who created the orbital engine and the orbital combustion process engine. Sarich established the Orbital Engine Company, which created the orbital combustion process (OCP) engine, which was based on a two-stroke concept. Between 1954 and 1963, he worked as a fitter, turner, and trainee engineer for the Western Australian Government Railways. Between 1963 and 1965, he worked as a plant engineer for Thiess Brothers, where he was in charge of the standard gauge project, before starting his own engineering and service station operation. Before becoming regional general manager and an investor, Sarich worked as a sales engineer and an investor in earth moving and industrial machinery. He became managing director of Orbital Engine Company Pty Ltd and chief executive officer and chairman of Orbital Engine Corporation as he developed the orbital engine. After leaving Orbital, he became Executive Chairman of Cape Bouvard Investments, a private family investment firm.

Ralph Sarich Personal Life

Sarich and Patricia married in September 1962 after meeting in 1957. Patricia was born in Kellerberrin, Western Australia, to parents who emigrated to Australia as children from Britain following World War I. Peter and Jennifer are their two children (deceased). Jennifer committed suicide in 2017.

His net worth was estimated at $810 million as at 2019 by Forbes and then $1.08 billion as at 2020 by Financial Review List.
