Romy Schneider Biography

Rosemarie Magdalena Albach was born in Vienna six months after Austria was annexed by the German Reich to actors Magda Schneider and Wolf Albach-Retty. Rosa Albach-Retty, her paternal grandmother, was also an actress. Schneider was born in Germany to a German mother and an Austrian father. Schneider began attending the Schönau elementary school in September 1944, and from July 1949 she attended the girls’ boarding school at Castle Goldenstein [de], a private secondary school run by the Augustinian Canonesses of the Congregation of Notre Dame in Elsbethen, near Salzburg.


Romy Schneider Career

Romy Schneider was a French-German actress. She began her career in the German Heimatfilm genre when she was 15 years old, in the early 1950s. She played Empress Elisabeth of Austria in the Austrian Sissi trilogy from 1955 to 1957, and later reprised the role in a more mature version in Luchino Visconti’s Ludwig (1973). Schneider relocated to France, where she collaborated on successful and critically acclaimed films with some of the most prominent film directors of the time. When the White Lilacs Bloom Again (1953), Romy Schneider-first Albach’s film, was made when she was 15 years old. Schneider played a young Queen Victoria in the Austrian film Mädchenjahre einer Königin for the first time in 1954. (known in the U.S. as The Story of Vickie and in Britain as Victoria in Dover).During the 1970s, Schneider continued to work in France, most notably on five films with director Claude Sautet. Their first collaboration, The Things of Life (Les choses de la vie, 1970), with Michel Piccoli, established Schneider as a French icon. The three worked together again for the noir thriller Max et les ferrailleurs (Max and the Junkmen, 1971), and she appeared in Sautet’s César et Rosalie with Yves Montand (1972).

Romy Schneider Personal Life

Schneider married German director and actor Harry Meyen in July 1966 after her relationship with Delon ended; they later divorced. David Christopher, the couple’s son, was born (1966–1981). David died in July 1981, at the age of 14, after attempting to climb the spiked fence at his stepfather’s parents’ house and puncturing his femoral artery. She was in relationships with Oswalt Kolle (1964) and actor Bruno Ganz (early 1970s). During the filming of The Train, she had a brief affair with Jean-Louis Trintignant (1973).

Schneider married her private secretary, Daniel Biasini [fr], in 1975; they divorced in 1981. Sarah, their daughter, is an actress. Laurent Pétin, a film producer, was her most recent romantic partner.
Alice Schwarzer revealed in her 2018 biography Romy Schneider intime that Schneider confided in her that she had sexual relationships with women and was deeply in love with her close friend Simone Signoret.

Romy Schneider Death

Schneider began drinking excessively after her son died. Claude Pétin, Schneider’s friend and Laurent Pétin’s sister, stated that she no longer drank at the time of her death and believes it was a natural death.
Schneider was discovered dead in her Paris apartment on May 29, 1982. Laurent Davenas [fr], the examining magistrate, declared that she died of cardiac arrest. Schneider’s cardiac arrest, according to Claude Pétin, was caused by a weakened heart caused by a kidney operation she had months before.
