Lara Plătăreanu, born in Bucharest, is the only child of actor Valentin Plătăreanu and his wife, Doina. Her family fled to West Germany in 1983 to escape Nicolae Ceaușescu’s Communist Romanian rule. Although the family intended to immigrate to Canada, they first resided in Freiburg im Breisgau before traveling to Berlin.

By the age of sixteen, she was playing lead roles in various television dramas; since then, she has appeared in films, including the Academy Award-nominated 2004 film Downfall, in which she played Traudl Junge, Adolf Hitler’s secretary; following this, Francis Ford Coppola wrote her a letter and gave her a leading role in Youth Without Youth (2007).
In 2007, she played Belgian journalist Annik Honoré in the Ian Curtis biopic Control. She was a member of the Cannes Film Festival jury in 2008.
